Our
Mission:
Our goal is to foster the learning of cultural arts by
providing a collaborative center for local Arts
Organizations and Individual Artists. We hope to promote
Creative and Artistic links between Cultures and to
provide a supportive environment for the preservation and
Celebration of Cultural Arts.
About our collective:
The SCAC was formed in 2005 through the joint efforts of
local Artists who decided that they wanted to address the
tremendous need for Dance space in the Sacramento
Community. The Center currently has 6 resident dance
companies that offer classes and performing groups.
They are; Nube de Oro (Folklorico Children &
Youth), Raices de Mi Tierra (Folklorico Adults),
La Evolucion Dance Company (Salsa Adults), Lyons
Den Etnertainment (West African all ages),
Movimiento Ballet Latino (Ballet Adults),
Aftershock Dance Co. (Clogging all ages), and
Azteca Quetzalcoatl Citlali (Aztec Dance all ages).
Our performance companies may be contacted
individually for performances and class information.
In addition, we
collaborate on educational outreach in schools and
events in the community.
Owners:
The Center is owned and operated locally by Roxana and
José Borrego. The Borrego Family has been involved in the
Sacramento Cultural Arts Community for nearly 20 years.
The
Borregos are dedicated to incorporating cultural arts in
education and abroad. They both founded folklorico curriculums in
Sacramento area schools, have served on organizational
boards, and volunteered to organize many community events
in our community.
In 1997, Roxana Borrego began
teaching the only folklorico curriculum in Sacramento at
Sacramento High School. In 2005 she rewrote the
curriculum and it became the only college preperatory
folklorico class offered in Northern California. Roxana is
a member of the Danzantes Unidos Festival, the Asosacion
Nacional de Grupos Folkloricos, the Artistic Director of
Riaces de Mi Tierra, a member of La Evolucion Dance Co.,
the Dance Events Chairwoman for Festival de La Familia,
and adjunct faculty at
Cal State University Sacramento in the department of
Theatre & Dance. She completed her masters
degree at CSUS in 1998 and wrote her masters thesis titled
"Ethnic Identity Development through Traditional Mexican
Dance". She is currently a Licensed Marriage &
Family Therapist and a
member of the American Dance Therapy Association.
She hopes to obtain her doctorate degree in Cultural
Studies in the near future.
Jose
Borrego has been a long time supporter in the arts.
In 1998 he became part time faculty at Cal State
University Sacramento and taught folklorico in the
PE/Dance department for several years. He was a long time member of the Yemaya Salsa Dance Troupe and
currently dances with La Evolucion Dance Co. He previously perfomed with the Chicano Theatre group, Teatro
Espejo and is the Managing Director of Grupo Folklorico
Raices de Mi Tierra. Jose has served on several committees and boards
including the Danzantes Unidos Festival, Festival de La
Familia Entertainment Committee, and La Raza Galeria Posada.
He completed his Juris Doctorate in 1996 and is the owner
of Borrego Law Firm Incorporated. He is currently
the Treasurer for the La Raza Lawyers Associasion and a
member of the California Applicant Attorney's Association.
Both
Roxana and Jose founded the non profit corporation
Grupo Folklorico Raices de Mi Tierra in 1995 and have
served as the Artistic & Managing Directors since its
inception.
